CNTR Graduate Seminar

The CNTR Graduate Seminar features presentations by current graduate students advised by CNTR affiliates or enrolled in DSI graduate programs, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of research topics investigated at the CNTR.  These topics include privacy, surveillance, algorithmic fairness, AI governance and policy, digital equity, socially responsible computing, participatory and community-centered AI, and more.

Each week we'll hear from graduate students, whether Masters or PhD, who will present their works-in-progress for academic critique.

Work can be:

  • abstracts or papers for conference submissions
  • research proposals, literature reviews, or methodology rationale for upcoming research
  • thesis or dissertation research updates
  • manuscripts for journal publication
  • funding proposals

Students will learn:

  • How to present your work for critique
  • How to evaluate research methodologies
  • How to give thoughtful, actionable critique to others
  • How to respond to critique

Seminar format:

  • 4:00 to 4:50pm, Tuesdays, on Zoom and in DSI
  • Each 50-minute session features one presenter and one facilitator to ensure a focused discussion.
  • Presenter:  Shares their work in progress and guides the critique by identifying specific areas of friction.  Key questions to address:
    • What am I sharing today?
    • Where do I feel stuck in my process?
    • What specific feedback or help do I need most right now?
  • Facilitator:  Manages the session flow, ensures constructive dialogue, and helps synthesize feedback provided by the group.
