CNTR publishes two papers at 2024 AAAI-ACM Conference

Researchers at the CNTR published two papers at the 2024 AAAI-ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society.

Rui-Jie Yew, Lucy Qin, and Suresh Venkatasubramanian published You Still See Me: How Data Protection Supports the Architecture of AI Surveillance”. This paper illustrates how privacy-preserving technologies – often presented as a solution to the problem of data collection and surveillance - can in fact exacerbate these problems.

Kweku Kwegyir-Aggrey, Naveen Durvasala, Jennifer Wang, and Suresh Venkatasubramanian published “Observing Context Improves Disparity Estimation when Race is Unobserved”. This paper examines conditions under which Bayesian Improved Surname Geocoding (BISG) – a method used to infer demographic attributes without collecting them – might fail to provide accurate answers, and how we might fix it.
