Fork in the Code: A Fable From the Future
We live in a world where profit is the only religion, speed is the only operating mode, and innovation is not for progress, but for the thrill of the launch. In this world, responsible technology development has been relegated to an afterthought; the footnote on a checklist that few even bother to read.
But it doesn't have to be this way. Imagine it’s the year 2076. There are two paths to take.
On the first path, the Center for Technological Responsibility prepared students not just to code, but to understand the world their code will shape. They developed curricula that helped students understand the societal impact of the technical topics they study. These students became developers who questioned unnecessary data collection, product owners who acted on behalf of the user, and leaders who empowered everyone.
Because of them, a patient could safely rely on automated systems to navigate healthcare and receive a plain-language explanation of every diagnosis. A worker could trust that monitoring tools weren’t watching more than they needed to because the systems came with transparent and auditable logs. And in their communities, new technology was built with inclusive design as the highest priority, ensuring access and empowerment for everyone.
Meanwhile down another path, the Center for Technical Recklessness taught students that their work ends at the keyboard. They developed curricula that taught students to only optimize for speed, profit, or scale. These students became developers who did what they were told, product owners who focused on the bottom line, and leaders who didn't care about the people impacted by their systems.
Because of them, every moment became a transaction where everyday tools quietly siphoned more data than anyone realized. This data was monetized without oversight resulting in unsafe, ineffective systems that exposed everyone to digital terrorists. Automated systems stripped personal history for profit, turning intimacy into a black-market commodity. People came to fear these systems rather than rely upon them.
It doesn't have to be this way. Imagine it’s the year 2076. There are two paths to take.
On the first path, the Center for Technological Responsibility facilitated partnerships between technologists, scholars, and local communities. They made sure that end users, stakeholders, and regular people had direct input in the design, implementation, and deployment of automated systems. They didn’t force people to adapt to technology; they forced the technology to adapt to people.
Because of them, municipal decision-making systems were co-designed with senior residents, allowing them to navigate public services and access benefits seamlessly without the need of an advocate. Communities helped develop and vet multi-lingual public information platforms that respected multiple languages and cultures. Individuals didn’t just use automated systems, they helped shape them. They created tools that expanded access, empowered participation, and permanently anchored the status quo to the public good.
Meanwhile on a different path, the Center for Technical Recklessness ignored communities entirely. They built tools in a vacuum for people who looked and thought just like them. They refused input from the communities those technologies would impact. They created tools that further hoarded knowledge for the wealthy and built collaborative echo-chambers where the only opinion heard was theirs.
Because of them, critical services crumbled, made harder to reach by design. The elderly were disenfranchised, the poor algorithmically flagged and penalized, and the disabled shunned by inaccessible platforms. Technology widened the gap between the powerful and the powerless, becoming a tangled web that only the right background, the right tech, or the right connections could navigate. Fear and distrust replaced participation, and the promise of technology was betrayed. Entire communities were rendered invisible, functionally erased by the systems that were supposed to serve everyone.

Down the first path, the Center for Technological Responsibility was not content to simply fix broken systems or manage existing risks. They taught a generation of leaders to reimagine the very purpose of technology itself, asking not just "What can we build?" but “How can technology help us build the society we want?”
Because of them, people were able to solve their own unique problems through technology. A patient could clearly understand the medical procedures prescribed by their doctor and if those services were covered. A family could easily analyse and organize their expenses, plan for college as well as retirement, and not have to live paycheck to paycheck. A person with limited mobility could navigate the barriers of any environment.
Meanwhile on a different path, the Center for Technical Recklessness continued to double down on pure technological exploitation. Their graduates saw every problem as one to be fixed by technology. They built closed-source, monopolistic AI systems designed to replace, instead of augment, human labor. Knowledge became concentrated in the hands of a few leading to the creation of a vast, permanent digital underclass.
Because of them, the promise of happiness could not be realized. The world became two tiers: the AI owners and the digitally redundant.
